Volleyball serves up new opportunities for youth in Westridge

The City’s Recreation and Parks Department, in collaboration with Ward 81 Councillor Ashley Potts, hosted the first-ever youth volleyball tournament at Parkhurst Primary School in Mitchells Plain on Friday, 20 June 2025.

The event forms part of the City’s Youth Month celebrations and is aimed at promoting access to new recreational opportunities for young people.

The tournament followed a series of volleyball coaching clinics that started in April 2025, aimed at children between eight and 16. Work is under way to get more primary schools to sign up in the coming months.

‘By investing in both infrastructure and programming, we are opening doors for young people to discover new talents, stay active and connect with their communities in meaningful ways. It’s wonderful to know that family and friends supported and inspired the young players,’ said Councillor Francine Higham, Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health.

Although volleyball is often seen as a summer sport, it can be played year-round, both indoors and outdoors. With winter in full swing, the Recreation and Parks team is exploring opportunities to host the programme at indoor venues going forward to ensure continuity through the colder months.

‘This tournament highlights the importance of creating safe, inclusive spaces where young people can grow in confidence, build friendships and stay active throughout the year,’ said Councillor Ashley Potts.

The event was originally scheduled to take place on the new outdoor volleyball court at Westridge Swimming Pool, but prevailing weather conditions on the day called for a Plan B. With the support of Principal Mr Stephan Visser and his team, the tournament continued in the courtyard of Parkhurst Primary School once the weather conditions improved.

 

Western Province volleyball players were also in attendance, delivering an exciting exhibition match to inspire the young participants and demonstrating key techniques, including how to deliver a serve.

The City remains committed to expanding access to inclusive and engaging recreational programmes, helping youth across Cape Town grow through participating in recreation and sport, no matter the season.
